The Biostatistician is expected to conduct bio-statistical analyses of epidemiological data collected from field surveys conducted islandwide and provide technical advice concerning behavioral and epidemiological studies in respect to HIV/AIDS and sexual health. Under the direction of the Principal Director, Forest Operations the incumbent is responsible for sociological, anthropological and agro-forestry work carried out in rural communities, in performing extension and training activities with farmers (individuals and groups ), in data collection, compilation and analysis, and in working with gender sensitive issues.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Introduces interventions throughout the Watershed areas engineered to foster participation at the community level by:-
• Conducting research to include in demographic structure, occupation profiles and stakeholder identification;
• Identifying and analyzing the source of livelihood, strategies and linkages within communities;
• Identifying gender-related issues within communities;
• Establishing, developing and monitoring local Forest Management Committees (LFMCs);
• Recommending approaches and strategies for the effective participation of community members in LFMCs;
• Facilitating the development of the Local Forest Management Plan;
• Acting in an advisory capacity to LFMCs after their establishment;
• Developing procedures/systems for monitoring the sustainability of LFMCs.
2. Conducts sociological and socio-economic studies/research to include data collection, compilation and statistical analyses while ensuring data validity and availabilityby:-
• Identify the need for specific research and make recommendations accordingly;
• Designing research programs to answer specific research related questions by designing surveys;
• Collecting information and making judgment through observation, interview and review of documents;
• Analyzing and evaluating data; and ensuring proper storage;
• Submitting final report on each research/study conducted;
• Relating known facts and research results obtained to produce useful conclusions from work undertaken; and
• Advising the Forestry sector on new information approaches, techniques and measures for improving sociological and anthropological practices through written reports, papers, experimental result, lectures locally, regionally and internationally.
Minimum Required Education and experience
• A first Degree in Sociology;
• Three (3) years experience in sociological research;
OR
• Any other acceptable combination of academic qualification and field experience.
